Sami's Kabab House Astoria Menu Astoria, NY Restaurant

The Vegetable Combo has dreadful canned eggplant and both the falafel and hummus are bland with no seasoning. They all have their own dreams and aspirations but they are unable to pursue them as they are stuck at the restaurant supporting their father. Gordon is shocked to discover that all the children all work at the restaurant. Gordon is met by Sam's children, they all have plenty to say about the problems at the restaurant. They argue in front of the customers and resent being forced to work in the restaurant. Sam was forced to sack his staff to reduce costs and is now $70,000 in debt.

Supplement from a grab-and-go refrigerated case by the entrance, which showcases salads and dips like kidney beans, yogurt cucumber, and several eggplant preparations. Hovik Martirosyan and wife Alvard turned their tiny side street restaurant into a beloved Armenian kebab destination with help from social media savvy son Armen. Mini Kabob has built a national reputation in publications like The New York Times, which included them in “America’s Favorite Restaurants” in 2021.

He first showcased the family’s culinary traditions at Aria Meat Market in Burbank, which dates to 2013. This butcher shop used to grill kebabs, and not just sell raw proteins. This grab-and-go strip mall restaurant with a steer horn logo offers no seating, but they do grill a la carte kebabs over gas, all available for sale by the skewer.

In addition to takeout orders and deliveries to homebound customers, Sami donated meals to a local hospital through Queens Together, a nonprofit organization that supports local restaurants and food businesses. Founded, in large part, to help feed frontline workers, Queens Together continues to provide relief to people who face food and economic insecurity. Almost before we’d sat down, tea and rice pudding had arrived at our table. We’d arranged a time to speak with him at his namesake Afghan restaurant in Astoria, Sami’s Kabab House, and we’d quickly discovered that refreshments were an essential prelude to our conversation. Thanks for stopping by, and I do truly hope this site will end up being your go-to for all things kebabs, grilling, smoking, or so many other ways of cooking.

Sam’s Mediterranean Kabob Room Kitchen Nightmares Update – Still Open in 2024?

Kebabs come with mammoth servings of meat on a bed of rice pilaf. Head to this neighborhood institution before it gets bulldozed. The blue-and-white paper placements at this open-till-midnight spot won’t let customers forget that it was once voted the best diner in Queens. Still, it’s a local favorite for hefty breakfast combos, multi-level hot sandwiches, and a nostalgic banana split. Greek options also abound, with waiters in penguin-esque suits. Regulars know to grab a bag of chips and a beverage before stepping up to the counter, with cash ready and an exact order to share with the notoriously gruff staff.

Of course, great kebabs aren’t completely limited to the (818) or the Middle East and Caucasus. Thanks to the proliferation of restaurants, butcher shops, and street stands that understand how to grill, skewered meat has never been better in LA., making it tough to narrow this list down to 16 options. As previously noted, other Armenian meat markets also grill notable kebabs, but they require advance notice. Steamed dumplings stuffed with beef, onions, cilantro and spices. Topped with our homemade garlic mint yogurt sauce and garnished with lamb gravy and yellow split peas. Evolved from a well-known Palestinian food truck that opened a permanent location in 2015, King of Falafel & Shawarma offers its own spin on Levantine classics.

Thanks to Sami’s, Astoria can claim some of NYC’s best Afghan food. Their lamb and beef kofta kebabs are worth traveling for, the borani banjan comes covered in yogurt that melts into a bed of fluffy seasoned rice, and the vinegary leek aushak is a must-order. Come for a family or group dinner, order a variety of kebabs, and pretend that you don’t fully intend to bogart multiple orders of Afghan bread. Considering LA has such large populations from countries with kebab-rich traditions like Armenia and Iran, it’s natural that skewered meats are a strength across LA County. Prominent pockets in Glendale, North Hollywood, Sunland and the western San Fernando Valley are particularly strong.

Final thoughts on Sam’s Mediterranean Kabob Room

Ordered the kabob combos (chicken and beef) with hummus, couscous, and pita bread. I’m happy to say I ate it all this time around, but it really is an acquired taste for me. The pita bread was great and so was the rice with a bit of salt and pepper I added.

They arrive dressed, resting on thick yogurt with an insistent beat of garlic and strewed with more ground beef in sunset slashes of long-broken-down tomatoes and onions. This old-school mom-and-pop shop is a holdout from an era when the Balkan immigrant population was heavier in Astoria, and it has some of the best Balkan comfort foods the city has to offer. Its specialities include juicy cevapi sausages, saucy sarma stuffed cabbage, puffy lepinja bread, and a lightly sweet ajvar, a roasted red pepper and eggplant spread. Spend some time there and customers will inevitably see round trays of spinach pie cheese boureks going in and out of the oven. This cozy, brightly colored Thai restaurant has a narrow indoor area that managed to fit in a full bar, as well as a romantic back garden with a fountain and pond.

Skewers come in lavash wraps or on plates with parsley, chopped white onions, sliced tomato, and enough lavash to form a pillow. This Iranian market has expanded in size and scope since Mory Pourvasei opened the business in 1987. Stepson Salimit Soheil became the managing partner 10 years ago and greatly expanded prepared food offerings, including charcoal-grilled kebabs on weekends in the back parking lot. He marinates skewers in a proprietary marinade that includes olive oil, fresh and powdered garlic, onions, bell peppers, and saffron. These flavors and the charcoal smoke infuse wonderful flavor in koobideh (ground beef or chicken), salmon, chicken thighs, and Cornish game hen. Offal lovers will appreciate more intense lamb hearts and livers.

Fresh and juicy cuts of salmon marinated in traditional Afghan spices. He continued selling coffee and donuts where permitted, but he soon found that business was not as good without his established customers. Driving a yellow cab – fortunately, Sami had already obtained his hack license – became a more reliable way to support his family and save for the future. Many of his siblings, too, have emigrated to the States, but not all. Sami still has family ties to Afghanistan, and he’s returned to visit them, now with a wife and four children of his own. But today, he says, there’s “lots of fighting in Afghanistan…people have far fewer chances.” He doesn’t plan to return again during the current, Taliban, rule.

There’s something about specialty cooking that has always appealed to me. This LIC spot is Sami’s second location, and it's more of a takeout hub than their bustling Astoria restaurant. There are only a couple of small tables in the narrow room, but if you do eat in, you’ll get to enjoy some fresh, hot naan right out of the oven. Ashak, indistinguishable from mantu from the outside, reveal green interiors lined with Chinese leeks, the closest Mr. Zaman can find to Afghan gandana.

The fragrance is punchier than the flavor, which is lulling and tentatively sweet. Although theoretically vegetarian, ashak also come strewn with ground beef. Sam also blamed the rise of competition from other restaurants in the area and a number of new Mediterranean restaurants planned to open close to their location. On relaunch night, the customers are raving about the decor and they love the new food. Sam rates his food as a 9/10 and recommends a lamb shank from New Zealand to Gordon. I was pleasantly surprised when a side salad was delivered to my table.

The business only had an overall three star review, but there were plenty of five star reviews sprinkled in there (along with one star reviews, of course). Now that we’ve recapped the Sam’s Mediterranean Kabob Room Kitchen Nightmares episode, let’s talk about what happened to the restaurant after Gordon Ramsay and his crew left Monrovia, CA. Gordon also completely revamped the menu with new contemporary Mediterranean dishes and recipes. Additionally, both the falafel and hummus lack flavor due to not being seasoned.

Loukoumi is a Greek restaurant of more recent vintage, located in an obscure neighborhood and hence a little more relaxing overall. A fried thin pocket of dough filled with potatoes, sweet onions, cilantro, leek and various spices. This tiny spot in Astoria’s Little Egypt has been turning out Cairo- and Alexandria-style dishes since 1989. Chef Ali El Sayed whips up stews and grills meats, including offal like sweetbreads and lamb brain.
